Freckled Pelt


Freckled Pelt lichen or Spotted dog lichen scientifically known as Peltigera aphthosa. This lichen can grow to be 3 inches across, has a dull green grayish color when dry but turns bright green when wet and has warts on the surface of it and has a cottony texture. Caribou love munching on these lichen in the fall.

In Scandinavia the boil the lichen and use it to treat dried and chapped skin on feet and baby's. You can find Freckled pelt lichen growing on dead trees and moss in Boreal Forrest in north arctic, lower 48's , Alaska, Canada and the pacific northwest.
